Social Media Coordinator

As the social media coordinator for the Getty, I helped shape the voice for the Museum's Facebook page and launch other social media channels like Tumblr and Instagram that helped build new audiences.

Whether it's a GIF or a status update- I produce engaging stories that helps us connect with our community.

My East LA

Not finding a central location to find interesting stories in East Los Angeles, I created one. A combination of curating articles online and creating fresh, original content has made My East LA the largest East Los Angeles Facebook page and growing. It's not the number of Likes I'm most proud of but the quality of the conversation. Using social media in this way has not only created unique readers for my content but potential sources and tips I couldn't get otherwise as a reporter.

A lot of my photojournalism, videography and stories first published on My East LA found a second home with The Los Angeles Times, NPR, KPCC and NBC.

Dorothea Lange Fellow

I was selected to become a Dorothea Lange Fellow based on my QuinceaƱera project.

I've always been fascinated by how cultures intersect. QuinceaƱeras became an opportunity to look at how Latinas negotiate between being a girl in one culture and a woman in another.

As a journalist working in new media, I'm increasingly aware of the power of the image. I like to communicate visually and it's largely becoming the way I report and tell stories.

Mission Local

Journalist

With many underserved communities living in news deserts - without reliable, consistent reporting in their neighborhood- the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism created hyperlocal news websites.

As a reporter for Mission Local in San Francisco, I found sources on Twitter and on the streets. While I learned how to shoot and edit video, basic coding, write stories on tight deadlines, and file them from the field, it was Spanish that became my most valued skill. I was able to quickly establish trust with sources - many of whom were undocumented.
